Recommended Guitars For Beginners

What Guitar Should I Buy?

Many people who want to learn how to play the guitar are complete beginners and have never picked up a guitar before. Some don’t even have a guitar of their own to play or practice on.

As there are so many guitar brands and models out there to choose from, I often get asked for advice on which guitar to buy that’s suitable for a beginner; one that offers superb quality and sound but isn’t too expensive as a first guitar.

To help all you budding musicians out there, I’ve compiled a guide of affordable guitars recommended for beginners.

Recommended Acoustic Guitar

Acoustic Epiphone AJ Series

The Epiphone AJ Series is a fantastic acoustic guitar for beginners. The guitar produces a great sound at a price that won’t break the bank. The 21 fret guitar features mahogany back and sides and a tortoiseshell pickguard, whilst an okoume neck with a rosewood fingerboard produces the warm sound.

The Epiphone AJ-220S series is available in Natural, Mahagony Burst and Vintage Sunburst finish.
You can find Epiphone AJ-220S on Gear4Music.

Recommended Electric Guitars

Fender Squier Standard Stratocaster

The Fender Squier Standard Strat electric guitar is popular for a very good reason. Its single coil pickups are great for mellower tones used in jazz and funk, yet still suitable for those who want to channel their inner Jimi Hendrix, Mark Knopfler, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Yngwie Malmsteen, to name just a few. Whilst there are many variations of the Squier Strat out there, it is the Squier Standard Stratocaster that impresses the most with an excellent two pole tremolo that stays in tune.

With a choice of maple fingerboard for a brighter sound or rosewood fingerboard for warmer tones, the Squier Standard Stratocaster is the perfect electric guitar for both beginners and experienced guitarists alike.

The Squier Standard Strat is available in Vintage Burst and Cherry Sunburst from Gear4Music. The left-handed version is also available.

Epiphone G-400 SG Guitar

If you’re looking to play rock, metal and blues, then you can’t go wrong with the Epiphone SG. Its powerful humbucker pick ups give the beefy sound you’ll need. The guitar also provides unparalleled access to thinnest frets due to the double cutaway body. The SG is a firm favourite with rock guitarists and has been used for years by guitar players such as Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi, Judas Priest’s Glenn Tipton, ACDC’s Angus Young and The Who’s Pete Townsend.

The Epiphone G-400 is available in Vintage Worn Cherry at Gear4Music

Recommended Bass Guitar

Squier Precision or Squier Jazz Bass

Both the Squier Precision and Squier Jazz bass are great for all styles of bass guitar playing though the Precision is favoured by rock players. Both feature excellent build quality with 20 medium jumbo frets, alder body and open gear tuners.

Both the Squier Precision PJ Bass and Squier Jazz Bass are available in a range of colours.
